A comedy set against
the backdrop of the Jewish exodus of 1963.
As Jews were secretly leaving Morocco
for Israel,
Islamic law passed an edict that bars could only serve non-Muslims. As such,
Mustapha, a saloon owner who wants to keep his business, conspires to make sure
one Jew remains in town. Shlomo, a musician, decides
to stay in Bejjad, which makes Mustapha happy.
Mustapha then tries to keep Shlomo happy by editing
unpleasant information from the letters he receives. There is a real dramatic story
here in the plight of the emigrating Jews, who up to this point were coexisting
peacefully with Muslims, and in the loss experienced by the Arab society.
